The Real Reason You Like True Crime? It's Not Just Morbid Curiosity

(A personal essay from someone who would definitely survive the first act of a horror movie.)


I love true crime. Whether it’s a fictional procedural like Law and Order or a podcast hosted by a pretty girl in winged eyeliner telling me about a dismemberment while sipping cold brew—I'm all in. And being the type of person who hyperfix

ates, these shows eventually become background noise. I fall asleep to them. I work with them humming in my ears. I’ve matched the tone of a vacuum motor to the voice of my favorite host.


But one day, in a rare moment of self-awareness, I stopped and thought: Why? Why do I watch this stuff almost daily? Why do I know more about the Golden State Killer than I do about filing my taxes? (RIP to my CPA.) Naturally, I did what any terminally curious person does—I spiraled. And then I researched the spiral.


So, if you're like me—someone who hoards trauma facts like Pokémon cards—here’s why we gravitate toward true crime like moths to the metaphorical dumpster fire...
